Production Sound Mixer
Full Member
I have been active in sound recording for over half a century, working on features (from "Avatar" to "Zodiac, The House of"), television programs, “reality” shows, commercials, documentaries, music videos, ENG, and BTS. I've worked in 17 countries (so far). For the past two years I have been recording P-Cap videogames. I am based in Hollywood, California, USA.
I am equipped for HDR digital audio, M-S and X-Y Stereo, and Multi-track recording. (Also retro ¼”-tape analog – I still have 6 Nagras.) My equipment is replaced on a regular basis, before it becomes unreliable, but just in case, I always carry a spare for everything.
I am a member of AES, AMPAS, AMPS, ATAS, CAS, IATSE, IBEW, IPS, NABET, and a Life Member of SMPTE.
My background prior to 1968 consists of many years in the fields of electronics, computers, and science and engineering. I worked in computer hardware development (back in the days when some of them still used vacuum tubes). I have a B.S. in Physics from UCLA and I studied cinema at USC, earning certificates in Special Effects and Producing, which I was involved with initially.
I'm a senior citizen but not an invalid, and can mix standing with my bag as well as sitting at my cart. I love my job, and most of my tracks make it to the screen without ADR.
Emmy Award for "Live From Baghdad"
Emmy Nomination for "Tuesdays with Morrie"
CAS Nominations for both of the above.
Golden Reel Nomination for "Tuesdays with Morrie"
I taught sound recording at UCLA for 25 years, also at Art Center of Design, Hollywood Film School, LACC and USC. I conducted seminars and workshops for the AES and SMPTE. I was a technical consultant and expert witness for the Nagra Recorder Company..
In 1995, I was invited to Japan to present a technical paper at an international symposium on production recording. In 2010 and 2011, as a representative of major American sound equipment companies, I was sent to China to conduct seminars for local production mixers. In 2012, under the auspices of York University (Toronto), I traveled across Viet Nam for 6 weeks, training VTV-Network technical personnel and directors.
I wrote and published a time code manual, "Using Timecode in the Reel World", which made it to a third edition before the knowledge was sufficiently widespread that the book was no longer needed. I currently write technical/tutorial articles for trade magazines on a regular basis, and am presently working on a production-mixing textbook, to be published next year.
