James started his career working at CTS-Lansdowne recording studios as the facility technical manager, supporting titles such as Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. He then worked as a freelance technician for the likes of the BBC, Sony Whitfield Street and CTS-Lansdowne while also working as a recording engineer and producer.
He became a Senior Sound Consultant at Dolby, working on over 170 films internationally over nearly 11 years, and was one of the initial Dolby Atmos consultants and educators in the film, TV and music industries. He calibrated the sound and projection for dubbing theatres, film premieres and film festivals. He trained and lectured many industry professionals and educational institutions. He also co-wrote a patent, and the Dolby Atmos Home Entertainment Studio Technical Guidelines. He has worked on titles such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Alien: Covenant.
He then moved to Pinewood studios, where he project managed the redesigned of the 2 main dubbing theatres and worked on many Marvel productions and Jurassic World: Dominion.
More recently he has been teaching undergraduate and masters level audio engineering for the University of Gloucestershire and offering freelance consultancy for productions such as Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
In 2022 he accepted the role of Head of Audio Technology of Splice, a post production company in London.
