A FURTHER TRIBUTE TO

ROBIN CLARK

I was saddened to read in the last Newsletter that Robin Clarke had passed away. I first came across Robin at Shepperton Studios when we were both working on Half A Sixpence, myself as rerecording mixer. Paramount had flown over Carroll Knudson, who was an experienced Hollywood music editor, and Robin was his assistant. Half A Sixpence had a complicated music score, with many sections in multi-track, dancing feet and hand-claps, together with a large number of mono vocal tracks recorded here, there and everywhere. I was in a unique position to judge Robin’s work, and his meticulous cue-sheets, although rather large, were a joy to behold.

He learnt the tricks of the trade quickly from Carroll Knudson, particularly the use of the ubiquitous click track, which Carroll produced in loop form in unending variety. Later, Robin’s work as music editor on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang earned him praise from all sides, in an industry where good music editors are few and far between. I caught up with him again while running the answer print of Clash Of The Titans at Rank Laboratories; I didn’t realise I would never see him again. He will be greatly missed.
