AN INTRODUCTION TO

The Association of Motion Picture Sound, which is not a trade union, was founded in 1989 by a UK based group of like-minded Film and TV sound professionals. Their aims were to establish an organisation where those engaged in the various crafts of motion picture sound could exchange information, endeavour to solve common problems and keep abreast of rapidly changing technology.

High qualifying standards were set for Full Membership: a minimum of six years experience in a recognised operational role, with credits, and nomination by four Full members. Today, with a membership of over 300 of the most imaginative and highly experienced recording and sound-editing talent in the British cinema and television industries, AMPS is established as a respected Film and TV sound organisation in the UK, and has a growing international base.

In addition to Full Membership, AMPS has Associate, Affiliate, Honorary, Retired, & Student Membership categories that welcome junior industry colleagues and those currently on training courses, as well as important Corporate Sustaining members who support our aims.

The Association mounts a full programme of monthly technical meetings and manufacturers’ presentations. Working committees operate towards the establishment of recommended craft standards and practice, thus stimulating correspondence with similar organisations worldwide. Regular screenings of the latest feature films allow us to see and hear them in technically excellent conditions. Our quarterly Newsletter, covering meeting reports, news of our own and wider industry activities, articles of a technical nature and on movie sound history, is available as a hardcopy publication for distribution to the membership and on our website, and is read by many outside the organisation.

From time to time AMPS publishes useful technical booklets such as: ‘On Set Noise Investigation: A Guide to Better Sound’ and our current ‘Directory of Members’ which also offers advertising space for manufacturers and suppliers wishing to reach specific users in the Industry.

An elected council of eighteen full members spanning all the Film & TV sound crafts runs the Association, which is a constituent of the Cine Guilds of Great Britain and supportive of activities that encourage the development of UK Film and TV production.

If you are working in any of the following categories: Production Sound Mixers, Boom Operators, Re-Recording/ADR/Foley and Music Mixers, Sound and Music Editors, Maintenance Engineers, Foley Artistes or allied occupations - you may be eligible for membership.
